This is the FAQ, for frequently asked questions about the exchange itself. If you're new to exchanges and looking for a guide to unfamiliar terms, check out the Exchange Glossary.

Exchange Questions

What is Fang Frenzy?

It's a writing exchange hosted on AO3, with a particular focus on vampires! Participants sign up to create a work that's at least 500 words and that contains at least 1 vampire or vampire adjacent character. In return, they receive a work that also meets those specifications from someone else!

What counts as a vampire?

If a character exhibits more than one trait that's been previously associated with vampires in pop culture or literature, they're probably a vampire! The most common trait is needing to drink blood (or another substance) from a living being in order to survive. Other traits include but are not limited to immortality, undead-ness, supernatural beauty, supernatural speed/strength, and the ability to turn into a bat. This definition is by no means definitive. We're not looking to start fights about what's a vampire and what's not, so we'll be sticking to it pretty loosely. Whether or not a character counts as a vampire, a vampire-adjacent character, or not is decided on a case-by-case basis by the mod. So if you have a question about whether your character is a vampire, reach out to them!

What's a 'vampire-adjacent character'?

A vampire-adjacent character is one that exhibits vampiric traits, but might not be called a vampire by name, or may have traits that differentiate them from classic vampires. Examples include the Bloodsuckers from Darkest Dungeon, Flutterbat from My Little Pony, and Vladats from Ben 10.

Participation Questions

How do I join?

You join by signing up to the AO3 collection challenge before sign-ups end! You can also nominate fandoms during the nominations period, to make sure there's fandoms you want to write about in the exchange, but nominating fandoms doesn't automatically sign you up for the exchange.

How many fandoms do I have to offer/request during sign up? How many can I offer?

You must offer at least two fandoms, and you must request at least two fandoms. The maximum for both requests and offers is 10.

What fandoms and characters can I nominate?

You can nominate any characters from any fandom, even if they don't have vampires in them canonically.

How many fandoms and characters can I nominate?

You can nominate 10 fandoms maximum, each with a maximum amount of 15 characters!

Can I nominate crossovers?

Yes! Please do so under the fandom "Crossover Fandom", and make sure to clarify what fandom the characters are from! Put parentheses next to each character's name containing their fandom. Example: Count Orlok (Nosferatu 1922)

Can I nominate groups of characters?

Also yes, but given the amount of allowed characters in the nomination form, please do so only for groups with members that aren't clearly defined. For example, we would allow "Dracula's Army (Castlevania 2017)" but not "Dracula's Forgemasters (Castlevania 2017)". If you'd like, feel free to reach out to the mod with clarifications and details for groups, and we'll take them into account!

Can I nominate worldbuilding?

Yes! Please do so using the character name "Worldbuilding (Fandom Name)".

My fandom doesn't have vampires in it! Can I still nominate it?

Yes! But because all works must contain at least one vampire or vampire-adjacent character, works for fandoms that do not contain vampiric characters must be written such that they do contain vampiric characters. In short, if your fandom has no vampires, then you should write it as a Vampire AU or something of the like.

Do I need to nominate to participate?

Nope! Nominating is optional, but it helps you make sure that there's stuff you want to write about in the exchange.

What can I include in my DNW?

You can include anything in your DNW, from characters, to tropes, to scenarios, to tags, to certain ships, to writing details (like POV, certain words to exclude, certain formats), and more. The only thing you cannot DNW is genfic. (Genfic is fic that does not contain ships). We cannot force anyone to write ships that they don't want to write, and we cannot force people to write NSFW content.

I missed sign-ups. Can I still join?

Unfortunately, because matching happens based on sign-ups, if you missed them then we can't let you join the exchange. If you still want to be a part of it, you can take on pinch hits when they appear, or you can write a treat for someone!

Can I write for someone other than my assignment?

If they are accepting gifts through AO3 and indicate that they would be okay with treats in their signup, you can! If you wish to allow others who are not assigned to write your gift to create additional fics for you, you should indicate that you would like to receive treats in your signup.

What can I write?

You can write anything, as long as it fulfills your assignment's signup and contains at least 1 vampire or vampire-adjacent character. In order to fulfill your assignment's signup, your work must belong to at least 1 of their requested fandoms and contain at least 1 of their requested characters, and your work must not include anything your assignment specifically indicated that they did not want to receive. These specifications will be indicated in your assignment's DNW within their signup. If your assignment does not include a DNW, then you are free to write anything as long as it fills the other criteria.

Can I ask for an extension?

Not for this exchange! We have a hard deadline.

Can I talk to my recipient?

No! Please do not attempt to contact your recipient! If you need to ask them a question, reach out to the mod and they'll ask for you.

What if I need to drop out?

If you need to drop out, the assignment you were given to write will become a Pinch Hit. If you drop out, you are not guaranteed a gift, and your signup will not become a Pinch Hit if the person writing your gift drops out or defaults.

What if I don't make the deadline?

If you do not post your fic by the deadline, your assignment will become a Pinch Hit, and you will not be guaranteed a gift in the event that the person writing your gift also didn't make the deadline.
